FG commissions NDLEA’s first barracks 35 years after agency’s establishment

The Federal Government on February 17, 2025, marked a significant milestone with the commissioning of the first-ever barracks for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Thirty-five years after its establishment, the barracks will provide both office and residential accommodation for the agency’s officers, men, and women.
Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, who attended the commissioning ceremony, described the facility as more than just a physical structure. He highlighted that the modern administrative offices, detention facilities, secure storage, and residential accommodations were a vital investment in the agency’s human capital.
Fagbemi also expressed that the facility reflects the administration’s commitment to creating an environment where NDLEA personnel and their families can thrive securely.
“The establishment of this facility underscores President Bola Tinubu’s dedication to enhancing the welfare and security of NDLEA personnel,” Fagbemi said.
He further commended former President Muhammadu Buhari for initiating the project and praised President Tinubu for overseeing its completion. He also acknowledged the efforts of Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State for his support in ensuring the successful execution of the project.
Fagbemi continued, “This project, conceptualised and driven by Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), the dynamic Chairman and Chief Executive of NDLEA, demonstrates forward-thinking leadership that has defined his tenure in the agency.”
The Chairman/Chief Executive of NDLEA, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), also spoke at the ceremony, underscoring the importance of the barracks to the safety of NDLEA officers.
“Over the years, the lack of dedicated accommodation for our officers has exposed them to various risks, including the tragic loss of lives,” Marwa said, referring to incidents where personnel had been targeted and murdered in their homes.
“The urgency of this project cannot be overstated.” Located on an 18-hectare site in Kwanan Waya, Yola, the barracks includes office structures, accommodation, and auxiliary facilities. The complex features a modern administrative building for the NDLEA Adamawa State Command, a detention facility, an exhibit room, watchtowers, and operational pavilions. Residential accommodations include lodges for state and zonal commanders, as well as 80 one-bedroom terrace flats, 120 two-bedroom semi-detached flats, and 60 three-bedroom semi-detached flats.
Marwa expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his unwavering support for the NDLEA’s mission. He also acknowledged the contributions of other stakeholders, including the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, whose remarks were delivered by AIG Rex Dundun.
Ribadu’s message highlighted the importance of providing a conducive environment for national security agencies to thrive. Governor Fintiri, who also spoke at the event, commended President Tinubu, Marwa, and all involved for their foresight and dedication to the successful completion of the project.
Senator Ibrahim Dankwambo, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Drugs and Narcotics, noted that the work of NDLEA personnel requires a balance of humanity, detection, and enforcement, which can only be achieved through proper motivation and support.
In his remarks, Abass Adigun, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Narcotic Drugs, represented by Idris Dankawu, emphasised that ensuring the safety, security, and welfare of NDLEA personnel was vital. He reaffirmed the House’s commitment to advocating for better funding, improved working conditions, and enhanced operational capacity for the agency.
The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, Senator Francis Fadahunsi, National Assembly members from Adamawa State, and traditional rulers from across the region.
