The Federal Government has concluded arrangements aimed at restoring at least 100 million hectares of land, saying that the initiatives would help combat desertification and promote sustainable land management in the Sahel region.

Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, dropped the hint while addressing the ministerial segment of the Pan African Agency of the Great Green Wall (PAGGW), held in Dakar, Senegal.

Lawal stressed that Nigeria’s commitment to the Great Green Wall initiative will enable the government to restore the targeted hectares of land across the country by 2030.

He, therefore, highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts among African nations to address the challenges posed by climate change and land degradation.

The Environment Minister called for increased funding and support from international partners to ensure the success of the initiative, urging the participants to reaffirm their dedication to implementing the goals of the PAGGW to foster a sustainable future for the region.

“The Great Green Wall project is a flagship program of the African Union that seeks to transform the lives of millions of people in the Sahel by creating a mosaic of green and productive landscapes,” he explained.
