The Tiv Cultural and Social Association, the umbrella body representing the Tiv people in Taraba State, has called for the establishment of a peace committee to address the lingering conflicts between the Tiv and Jukun communities.
This was announced during a press briefing held by the association on Thursday in Jalingo, the state capital.
Led by its President General, James Baka, the association began by expressing appreciation to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and also commended the traditional ruler of Wukari for his efforts in promoting peace between the Tiv and Jukun people.
They noted his prayers and leadership as a beacon of hope and unity, urging all stakeholders to heed his call for collaborative efforts to resolve the tensions that have strained relations between the two communities.
They also acknowledged the state governor’s efforts in promoting peace among all ethnic groups, including the Tiv and Jukun, describing his vision for a harmonious Taraba as commendable.
In line with the call for peace, the association urged Governor Kefas to establish a peace committee aimed at addressing the root causes of the Tiv-Jukun conflict.
The proposed committee, as suggested by them, would focus on de-escalating tensions, facilitating the return and resettlement of displaced persons, and fostering reconciliation between the two ethnic groups.
“The Tiv Cultural and Social Association remains hopeful that, through the collaborative efforts of our leaders, traditional institutions, and community members, peace will once again flourish in our land,” the statement read.
