Integrating women into anti-insurgency scheme, GSAI tells govt

The Executive Director, Gender Strategy Advancement International (GSAI), Adaora Onyechere, had called on the Federal Government to make noticeable actions in integrating women in the fight against Insurgency.

She stated this in Abuja at the Women for Peace Culture and Arts Exhibition and the official launch of the GSAI baseline report.

She stated that with terrorism and extremism taking a heavy toll on communities in Africa in recent years, there is need to involve women in restoring peace.

According to her, women and girls make up at least, 79 per cent of approximately 2.5 million or more people that are displaced across the country.

“The increased use of rape, other forms of sexual violence and abduction from schools as tactics of systematic terror attacks on civilian populations is a demonstration that terrorism and extremism target and affect women, men, girls and boys in different ways.

“Women and girls are not only victims of terrorist and extremist acts: they also play diverse roles in support of or as part of terrorist and extremist groups.

“They equally contribute to actions and strategies that can counter and prevent terrorism and violent extremism in their communities, countries and across the world.

“It is time to think critically about the review of policies on violent extremism and be deliberate about women’s role and their right to be included in the conversation that affect them the most”, she said.

The First Lady of Bauchi State, Hajiya Aisha Bala Mohammed, in her remarks, commended the activities of GSAI.

The first who also decried the security situation in the country, stressed that damages perpetuated by insurgents have devastated the lives of people, especially women who are the most vulnerable gender.

While calling on all Nigerians to play effective roles in the fight against insurgency, she tasked the government to intensify efforts in containing the activities of terrorists and bandits across the country and ensure peace and security in the country.
