The Office of the Special Assistant to the Governor on Students’ Affairs in Abia State has demanded the immediate arraignment and prosecution of all suspects linked to the murder of a nursing student, Miss Chinwendu Achumba, under the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act 2015.
Miss Achumba, a 21-year-old indigene of Obingwa Local Council of Abia State, was murdered on Thursday, May 22, 2026, in Imo State.
The deceased, a post-basic midwifery student at Lady of Mercy College of Nursing, Umulogho, Obowo, Imo State, was found dead in her lodge at Umuadara, Umulogho, Obowo.
The Senior Adviser to the Governor of Abia State on Students’ Affairs, Chinedu Nwosu, in a statement, also demanded a public update on the investigation within 14 days, an immediate security review of student lodges in Umulogho, and the provision of psychosocial support for affected students and staff.
According to preliminary reports, Miss Achumba was found dead in her lodge room opposite the school compound between Wednesday and Thursday, May 20 and 21, 2026.
Reports indicated that the crime may have been motivated by rejection and obsession.
Nwosu commended the youths of Umulogho village for swiftly identifying the suspects and the Imo State Police Command for promptly arresting them before transferring the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Owerri.
He said: “We thank the Government of Imo State, particularly Commodore Oparaji Franklyn, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Imo State on Students’ Affairs, for the swift response to our calls.
“We also acknowledge the efforts of concerned citizens and netizens who helped escalate the matter on social media.
“We urge the Imo State Police Command and all authorities handling this case to conduct a thorough and professional investigation and ensure that justice is served without delay.
“The matter remains under investigation, and the Office of the Special Assistant to the Governor on Students’ Affairs, Abia State, will closely monitor the case to its lawful conclusion.
“Any injury to an Abia student is an injury to all Abia students, in line with His Excellency the Governor’s policy of zero tolerance for violence and crime, and in accordance with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
Meanwhile, the Imo State Police Command said it had commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the murder.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident in a statement, adding that the victim’s body was discovered in her private off-campus apartment.
Okoye said that following the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and operatives visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment, after which the body was recovered and deposited at the morgue.
According to him, investigations are ongoing to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident and apprehend all those responsible.
He also confirmed the arrest of one suspect for preliminary questioning to aid the ongoing investigation.
