After an 11-year pause, Julius Berger has resumed construction work in the Abuja Centenary City, following the contract signing ceremony for Phase 1 of the project’s primary infrastructure development.
The Abuja Centenary City project, first launched in 2014, was envisioned as a bold statement of Nigeria’s ambition for the new century. It is designed as a multinational lifestyle hub, with key components including five-star hotels, luxury residences, an International Commerce Centre, the Centenary International Convention Centre, the Mall of Africa, and a championship golf course.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Managing Director of Abuja Centenary City, Dr Odenigwe Ike Michaels, explained why Julius Berger Nigeria Plc was selected to handle the contract for road and related infrastructure.
According to him, the company’s reputation for delivering quality on several landmark projects across the country speaks volumes about its capacity. Michaels challenged Julius Berger to surpass its records in project delivery. He noted that the signing of the contract marked the official resumption of construction work in the city after more than a decade.
Describing the development as Abuja’s foremost urban renewal initiative, Michaels said the project is designed to attract international investment and establish a global lifestyle hub.
In his response, the Managing Director of Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, Dr Peer Lubasch, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to deliver another high-quality project.
“Centenary City is more than an urban development. It is an investment in the future of Abuja and the Federal Capital Territory; a catalyst for jobs, business opportunities, and international investment. It will showcase world-class shopping malls, hotels, leisure spaces, and recreation, including a championship golf course – all designed to reflect both modern excellence and Nigeria’s cultural heritage,” Lubasch said.
Recalling the company’s involvement from inception, he added: “Julius Berger’s relationship with Abuja Centenary City’s visionary project started in 2014, when it was launched as a bold statement of Nigeria’s ambition for the century. Since then, we have continued to share an unwavering belief in its promise. For over a decade, we have watched and supported its step-by-step transformation from a bold idea to reality.”
On the newly signed contract, Lubasch said: “The 4.31 km international-standard dual carriageway with various utilities and media is not just a road. It is the first major artery of this great city, opening access to the first development phase and laying the foundation for its growth.”
He stressed that Julius Berger, with more than six decades of experience, has earned trust for delivering infrastructure that endures. He assured that the company would bring the same precision, quality, and commitment to the Abuja Centenary City project to ensure it meets the world-class standards to which the Free Zone aspires.
“Together, we will give future residents and business investors the confidence that their commitment here is built on a solid and lasting foundation. And when you see this road completed, you will want to see many more kilometres of Julius Berger roads in this extraordinary city,” Lubasch declared.
The Managing Director was accompanied to the event by Julius Berger’s Regional Manager, Central and North, Oliver Berger, alongside other senior officials.
