The Ondo State Security Network Agency, also known as the Amotekun Corps, has arrested a 20-year-old man, identified as Friday Akinmade, for allegedly killing a 65-year-old woman in Owo, headquarters of Owo Local Council Area, Ondo State.

Akinmade allegedly struck the woman on the head with a plank, accusing her of stealing N3,000 from his room.

Corps Commander, Adetunji Adeleye, paraded Akinmade alongside other suspects in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
Adeleye disclosed that the security network had also apprehended another suspect, a 21-year-old man, for attempted murder.

Addressing the recent surge in criminal activity, Adeleye attributed the trend to the prevailing economic challenges, which he said had led to an increase in housebreaking incidents.

“We have in custody a 30-year-old man involved in malicious damage, cult activities, and attempted murder of law enforcement officers.

“Additionally, a 42-year-old man named Gbenro attacked Amotekun officers to conceal his illegal activities. Also paraded was Samuel Peter, 21, linked to attempted murder, and Akinmade, who allegedly committed outright murder,” he said.

According to Adeleye, the corps also detained a 20-year-old suspect, Segun Owolabi, for allegedly stealing motorcycles and robbing their owners.

Several individuals aged between 22 and 25, identified as Toba, Pelumi, Ogumade, and Oriade, were also accused of burglary, primarily targeting unoccupied homes. Another suspect, Shegwo Yusuf, was charged with damaging household property.

Adeleye assured the public that the Amotekun Corps remains committed to safeguarding the state, stressing that criminal activities in Ondo are declining.

“A review shows that Ondo State is more peaceful than before. I assure residents that we will continue our operations, both in towns and forests, to ensure safety,” he said.

Despite a few recent incidents of kidnapping near the state’s borders with Kogi and Edo, Adeleye noted that the overall security across Ondo’s 18 local councils remains stable.

“Ondo State is peaceful, community-friendly, and investment-friendly, and farmers are encouraged to resume farming as Amotekun rangers are deployed across forest reserves to prevent encroachment,” he added.
