Army, NDLEA arrest fake police officers with illicit drugs in Taraba

Troops from the Nigerian Army’s 6 Brigade, in collaboration with operatives from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested two individuals posing as police officers while transporting a large consignment of Cannabis sativa in Wukari Local Council of Taraba State.

The arrest was part of the ongoing military operation known as Operation Lafiya Nakowa, and occurred at Takum Junction, where two Toyota Hilux vehicles were intercepted.

The vehicles were found to be carrying 1,134 blocks of substances suspected to be cannabis.

In a statement released on Wednesday by the Brigade’s Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Lt. Umar Muhammad, it was mentioned that the operation was based on credible intelligence received by security forces.

The suspects were identified as 71-year-old Monday George, a dismissed Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), and 41-year-old Ezeugo Destiny Uche.

Both individuals were dressed in mobile police uniforms at the time of their arrest.

Preliminary investigations revealed that neither of them is currently serving as a member of the Nigeria Police Force.

Authorities suspect that the drugs originated from Akure in Ondo State and were en route to Adamawa State before being intercepted in Taraba.

Another group of suspects travelling in a Hilux vehicle abandoned their vehicle and fled upon seeing the troops. Their whereabouts are currently unknown.

The arrested suspects and the recovered exhibits have been handed over to the NDLEA office in Wukari for further investigation and potential prosecution.

The Commander of the 6 Brigade, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, commended the professionalism and collaboration between the Army and NDLEA operatives.

He reiterated the Brigade’s dedication to eliminating criminal elements from Taraba State and urged residents to assist security agencies by providing timely and credible information.
