Authorities in the United States have recovered the body of a Nigerian woman who vanished more than two weeks ago while out on a walk in Illinois, police said.
The remains of 42-year-old Olasinmibo Abosede, known to friends and family as Sinmi, were discovered on Thursday in the Springbrook Prairie Forest Preserve, Naperville police announced.
She had been missing since July 30, when she was last seen leaving her home near Springbrook Golf Course for a morning walk. Surveillance cameras captured her heading out in a black Adidas jacket, grey sweatpants, a headscarf and Crocs.
Officers responding to a call found the body in tall grass near 83rd Street and Chandelle Drive at around 1:55 pm. Police said the clothing matched what Abosede had been wearing when last sighted.
“While we believe the individual to be Sinmi, final confirmation will be made by the DuPage County Coroner’s Office,”
Naperville police chief Jason Arres said in a statement. “We are deeply saddened by this loss and extend our condolences to the Abosede family.”
Her husband, Gbenga, earlier confirmed she was seen on neighbourhood CCTV before disappearing. Search teams including volunteers and sniffer dogs had scoured the preserve for more than two weeks.
The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County said there were no immediate signs of foul play, but an autopsy would be conducted to confirm the cause of death.
“Our hearts go out to Sinmi’s family, friends and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” forest preserve police chief David Pederson said.
The investigation is being jointly led by forest preserve officers and Naperville police.
