Boy with genital defects in pain needs over N200m for surgery

A two-year-old boy, Miracle Okikiola Olasunkanmi, is currently experiencing severe discomfort following complications of hypospadias.

The boy, an indigene of Moro, a town in Osun State, has been battling severe pain because his private part has not been properly formed since his delivery on June 13, 2023.

Doctors have confirmed that he has a “hypospadias complex, which refers to cases of hypospadias, a congenital birth defect where the opening of the urethra is not at the tip of the penis, that are more severe or involve additional complications.”

After a series of tests and examinations, the parents of the boy, Mr. and Mrs. David Oluwaseyifunmi Olasunkanmi, have been informed of the need to urgently fly Miracle to Canada, where surgery will be carried out to correct the defect.

When rough estimates of the money needed for the surgical repair were issued, it was discovered that a whopping sum of $132,000 would be required to save Miracle from pain and allow him to live a healthy life.

It was gathered that the $132,000 required does not include funds for visas for the boy and his parents or other logistics expenses.
Converting the $132,000 to naira, it was discovered that Miracle would need over N200 million to have a normal genital.

Sadly, the parents said they have already expended all that they have in carrying out tests, scans, and paying for consultations at various hospitals.

David and Oluwaseyifunmi Olasunkanmi have appealed to Nigerians to save their son from dying in pain, saying that the hole beside Miracle’s penis, which looks like a vaginal opening, is already oozing an unpleasant odour.

Mr. David, in an interview with our correspondent, said: “We gave birth to our child Miracle Okikiola Olasunkanmi on the 13th of June 2023, and discovered that our child needs medical attention concerning his private part that is not properly formed, and his true gender could not be ascertained.

“On the third day, which is the 15th of June 2023, we took him to ADELOM Hospital at Unity and Peace Estate, Mosunloto Bus-stop along Itele-Otta Road, Ogun State, and we were directed to Igando General Hospital, Lagos State, and from there to LASUTH, Ikeja, Lagos State.

“We were instructed to go for some tests like MRI, Karyotype, and Abdomino-Pelvic Sonography.

“After all these tests were carried out, we were worried about our child’s deteriorating health condition, so we sought medical advice at the following private medical facilities: Saint Green Hospital, Jakande Estate, Isolo Gate, Lagos State, where Dr. Lipede told us that the surgery cannot be done in Nigeria and that we would need to fly him out of the country. He suggested a hospital for us: Toronto Children’s Hospital in Canada.

“We also went to Upward Medical Centre, Idimu, in case there might be a solution, but nothing could be done. Our child is suffering (Undescended testes, hole under like vaginal, and his penis is joined together). This makes him cry whenever he wakes up because of the pain, and the hole is producing a bad odour.

“Dr. Lipede told us that if the surgery is not carried out soon, there will be problems for our child.

“That is why we are seeking financial assistance because we are not financially capable of taking him out of the country for the surgery in Canada. I, the father, am a Residential Pastor in Word of His Grace Pentecostal Mission, Ijegun, Lagos, and my wife is a nurse. We have spent almost a million naira (#1,000,000:00) on all the tests, scans, and consultations so far.

“Please, we would like to use this medium to solicit urgent financial assistance,” the couple pleaded.
The parents have provided these bank details for support for Miracle’s surgical repair abroad: 0014363571, Access Bank, Olasunkanmi David Motolani.
