Significant number never return, say police
There are growing concerns over the rise in the number of missing individuals in Ogun State as nine persons have so far been declared missing in the past eleven days.
The Guardian gathered that the cases were reported in various police divisions in the state between December 27, 2024, and January 7, 2025.
It was learnt that the first case was reported on December 27, 2024, at the Imeko Police Division, followed by another on December 30, 2024, at the Idanyin Division.
A case of a missing person was also reported on January 2, 2025, at the Onipanu division, one was reported on January 5, at the Sakura division, while three cases were reported at the Ifo, Ajuwon, and Atiori divisions on January 6, and two cases reported at Ifo and Igode divisions on January 7.
Confirming the development, the spokesperson for Ogun State Police Command, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), Omolola Odutola, said the missing individuals cut across all age groups.
According to her, while only a small fraction of these individuals is located, a significant number regrettably did not return home.
She stressed that the Command as a proactive and community-oriented force, is committed to raising public awareness about this concerning trend and encouraging everyone to prioritise their safety by maintaining a heightened sense of security to avoid becoming a victim.
Odutola said the state’s Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, has outlined these measures as essential guidelines to keep the residents of Ogun State informed about the most pressing issues.
“In light of this, the commissioner, based on insights from rescued individuals, urges parents to refrain from using commercial transportation services for their children with unknown strangers.
“Additionally, restless youth are encouraged to activate digital communication and sharing features on their mobile devices while travelling, especially during moments of distress.
“It is crucial to inform the public that the control room can be contacted at 09164859299, and the police public relations department can be reached at 09159578888. The command is also active on all social media platforms,” she added.
