Justice A. Isyaka of the Kaduna State High Court has convicted and sentenced Promise Usman, Daniel Chinedu, Fahad Yusuf Badamasi, and Emmanuel Chidera Udochukwu to a correctional centre for offences related to fraud.
They were prosecuted by the Kaduna Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on separate one-count charges involving impersonation, cheating, and obtaining by false pretence.
All four defendants pleaded “guilty”, prompting the prosecution counsel, M. O. Arumemi, to urge the court to convict and sentence them accordingly. The defence counsel, however, pleaded for leniency, stating that the defendants were remorseful.
Justice Isyaka convicted and sentenced Udochukwu and Badamasi to two years imprisonment each, with an option of a N300,000 fine. In addition, Udochukwu forfeited his Huawei Y6 Pro 2020 mobile phone, while Badamasi forfeited his iPhone 7, both of which were identified as tools used in the commission of the crime, to the Federal Government.
Usman was sentenced to five years of imprisonment with an option of a N200,000 fine. He also forfeited his iPhone 13 (128GB) to the Federal Government.
Chinedu was sentenced to a five-year jail term or a fine of N150,000. In addition, he forfeited his iPhone 16 Pro, an iPad Pro, and $500, which were identified as tools and proceeds of his crime, to the Federal Government.
The convicts were arrested by the EFCC’s Kaduna Zonal Directorate in the Mahuta metropolis, Babar Saura, and Sabo areas of the state, following credible intelligence that exposed their fraudulent activities.
