Court orders remand of suspected Lagos rail vandal

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has arrested and secured the remand of a suspected railway vandal in Lagos State, in what authorities describe as a continued crackdown on the destruction of critical rail infrastructure.

The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Bashiru Hafeez, was apprehended on Thursday, March 26, 2026, by security personnel from Multi Eye Security Services during a routine patrol at the Mobolaji Johnson Train Station in Ebute-Metta.

He was reportedly found in possession of 15 pandrol clips, iron fasteners essential for holding rail tracks in place, believed to have been removed from the narrow gauge corridor in the Alagomeji area.

Railway officials warn that the removal of such components poses significant safety risks, including the potential for train derailments.

Following his arrest, Hafeez was handed over to the Nigerian Railway Police Command for investigation and prosecution. He has since been arraigned before a Lagos court and remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre, and the case adjourned till April 24, 2026.

Reacting to the development, NRC Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Kayode Opeifa, reiterated the corporation’s zero-tolerance stance for vandalism. He described the act as economic sabotage that threatens lives and undermines national infrastructure.

Opeifa commended the vigilance of the security personnel involved in the arrest and assured that the corporation, in collaboration with relevant security agencies.
