Dangote denies ownership of truck in fatal Enugu crash

Dangote Industries Limited has denied ownership of a truck involved in a fatal accident in Enugu, distancing itself from reports linking the vehicle to its fleet.

The crash on Wednesday morning involved a Howo truck loaded with cement and a Toyota Corolla. The vehicle, travelling from Aba to Abuja, bore markings associated with Dangote but was registered to another company, Visco Investment Global Limited.

In a statement, Dangote Group said the truck was operated by a third party, not part of its fleet. “We are engaging with the appropriate agencies to find out why the truck was carrying our logo when it is not part of our fleet,” the company said.

It added that it would introduce stricter checks on the unauthorised use of its brand identity. “Going forward, we will apply more scrutiny to the misuse of our logo on vehicles not linked to the Group,” it said.

The company explained that it typically avoids commenting on individual cases but was compelled to respond due to “misinformation” spreading on social media. It also pledged cooperation with authorities investigating the crash.

The incident adds to long-running criticism over Dangote-branded trucks, which have been linked to numerous road accidents across Nigeria. Last month, Ruth Otabor, the younger sister of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner Ijeoma “Phyna” Otabor, died following a leg amputation after being struck by a truck bearing Dangote’s logo in Edo State. Her family is seeking justice and compensation.

Public concern has grown over the use of heavy-duty trucks bearing the Dangote brand, with calls for stricter regulation and greater accountability. The company insisted it remained committed to “the highest standards of corporate responsibility, safety, and integrity.”

Authorities in Enugu said investigations into Wednesday’s crash were ongoing.
