The death toll from the tanker explosion on the Ugwu-Onyeama axis of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway has risen to 18, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
The Sector Commander of the FRSC, Enugu State Command, Mr Franklin Agbakoba, confirmed the increase in fatalities yesterday. The explosion occurred on Saturday at approximately 11:30 a.m. when a fuel-laden tanker, experiencing brake failure, crashed into 17 vehicles, causing a fire that resulted in the destruction of 11 vehicles.
Initially, the death toll was reported at 11, but Agbakoba revealed that an additional seven people, who had been rushed to nearby hospitals, succumbed to their injuries.
“Currently, the death toll from the unfortunate accident is 18 persons and we continue to pray for their souls to have eternal rest. However, three persons were not injured but profiled; and they have since rejoined their families and friends,” he said.
Among the burnt vehicles were one fuel tanker, one water tanker, 15 cars, and a tricycle. FRSC officers, alongside the Enugu State Fire Service, worked to extinguish the flames and evacuate the victims. The injured were taken to hospitals in Enugu for treatment.
Governor Peter Mbah visited the scene and pledged that the government would provide full medical care for the victims. He also announced plans to enhance road safety by enforcing stricter road rules and addressing sections of the federal road in disrepair.
