Defence minister seeks community support to combat oil theft in N’Delta
Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru Abubakar has pledged to eradicate oil bunkering in the Niger Delta, describing it as a menace that must be halted.
This commitment was part of the government’s broader efforts to address insecurity and economic challenges in the region.
During a working visit to Rivers State, the Minister visited an illegal crude oil refining site in Asari-Toru Local Council, where he witnessed the difficulties faced by the military in dismantling these operations.
His visit came amid increased efforts by the Nigerian Army to combat oil theft and illegal refining in the Niger Delta.
Abubakar stated, “This is my first visit to see the nature of illegal refineries and the challenges involved in dismantling them. Despite the difficult terrain, our gallant officers are working hard to shut down these operations.”
“This is the 67th site dismantled by this battalion; others are also doing their best. It is an ongoing process, and they have assured me these operations will be ended soon.”
The Minister stressed the need for community cooperation, urging Niger Delta residents to support the army by providing intelligence to help end oil bunkering.
