The Aniocha–Oshimili Elders’ Association has expressed concern over what it described as a growing culture of drug and narcotics abuse among youths, warning that the trend could pose security and political risks ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued in Asaba and signed by its President, Sir Clement Okonjo, and Secretary, Chief Chris Biose, the group, also known as IzuIkeiAniocha–Oshimili, called for urgent and coordinated intervention by government, security agencies and community institutions.
The association said the problem had moved beyond isolated incidents to become widespread across towns and villages in the constituency.
It warned that a rising population of unemployed and drug-dependent youths could become vulnerable to recruitment into political violence, criminal activities and social unrest if proactive steps are not taken.
According to the elders, safeguarding the future of the region requires a united approach. They urged parents, schools, faith-based organisations.
