Dispatch rider killed in truck collision at Otedola Bridge

Truck kills dispatch rider on Lagos expressway

A dispatch rider has died in a fatal collision at Otedola Bridge, inward Secretariat, along the Ogudu Toll Gate corridor, marking another tragedy within 24 hours and raising fresh concerns over road safety for commercial riders in Lagos.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that the accident involved a heavy-duty Volvo truck and the dispatch rider, with the impact proving fatal at the scene.

LASTMA officials on routine patrol responded swiftly, securing and cordoning off the area to prevent secondary accidents along the busy corridor.

The remains of the rider were subsequently handed over to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), which supported traffic management efforts at the scene, while officers from Alausa Police Station provided additional security.

Authorities promptly evacuated the wreckage, removing both the truck and the motorcycle to restore traffic flow. Despite the swift intervention, the incident caused significant congestion, with a backlog stretching towards the Berger axis before normal movement was gradually restored.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the victim’s family and stressed the need for stricter adherence to traffic regulations.

He urged all road users—particularly truck operators and dispatch riders—to exercise greater caution, noting that the agency would intensify enforcement and public safety advocacy to curb rising road fatalities.

“LASTMA remains committed to working with relevant stakeholders to strengthen safety measures and promote a sustainable road safety culture across Lagos,” he said.

The incident underscores the risks faced by dispatch riders operating on major highways and adds urgency to calls for improved safety enforcement and awareness.
