The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA)

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), in collaboration with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, has averted a potential disaster following a late night truck fire along the Secretariat inward Otedola Bridge axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The incident, which occurred on Saturday night, involved a Mack truck conveying an empty 20-foot container. According to preliminary findings, the vehicle suddenly caught fire while in motion, posing a serious threat to motorists and nearby infrastructure.

LASTMA officials responded swiftly to the scene, prioritising the safety of road users. The truck driver was successfully rescued without injury.

Given the high-risk nature of the location, officials immediately activated emergency response measures and worked closely with the Fire Service to contain the blaze. Their coordinated efforts led to the quick extinguishing of the fire, preventing it from escalating into a major incident.

The prompt intervention also ensured the early restoration of traffic flow, reducing disruption for commuters along the busy corridor.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the operatives for their professionalism and quick response, noting that their actions helped prevent what could have been a serious catastrophe. He reiterated the agency’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across Lagos roads.

Motorists were advised to carry out regular maintenance checks on their vehicles, particularly electrical and mechanical systems, to reduce the risk of similar incidents.

LASTMA reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining a safe and efficient traffic environment across the state.
