Enyaharo Isoko raises fund for flood victims in IDP camps

A newly formed professional organisation for the advancement of Isoko nation, Enyaharo Isoko has launched an appeal fund to assist displaced Isoko residents affected by the ravaging floods sweeping through the lower River Niger and parts of Delta State.

Lagos-based filmmaker, Opa Williams, drew the attention of the group to the two Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps at Ozoro and Emede and appealed to Enyaharo Isoko members to rise to the challenge of assisting the flood victims.
 
The campaign started in earnest when the filmmaking duo of Chico Ejiro, and the organisation’s convener and vice president, Kinsley Omoefe, began the fundraising drive that prompted a flurry of support last week.

The funds will be deployed to procure relief materials for the victims so as to make their present condition tolerable.
 
Virtually all the lower part of Isoko, comprising communities in the riverine areas, along the River Niger and Ase Creek, have been submerged under water in a flood that rapidly claimed farmlands and homes and which has rendered thousands homeless and their livelihood, mostly cassava, yams, and plantains lost in the flood.
 
This year’s flood is reminiscent of the flood disaster of 2012 that saw these same communities affected, including Uzere, Araya, Ivrogbo-Irri, Umeh, and Ikpide-Irri. So far, over 5,000 persons have been displaced, with many evacuated from the affected parts.
 
Made up of Isoko skilled professionals in various fields of human endeavours, Enyaharo Isoko has also made an urgent appeal to all well-meaning Isoko philanthropists to come to the aid of the flood victims to help ameliorate their suffering.

The organisation also appealed to politicians and the two council chairmen of Isoko North and South council areas to do all they could to rehabilitate the victims until the flood subsides.
