Operatives of the Nigeria Police, Ondo State Command, have arrested five suspected cultists allegedly belonging to the dreaded ‘Eiye’ confraternity in Akungba-Akoko, Akoko South West Local Council Area of the state.
The suspects identified as Dare Adesuye, Joshua Ayeerun, Ojo Omole, Dele Adu and Idowu Akeju were arrested in the community which is host to the Adekunle Ajasin University during a secret meeting while chanting cult-related slogans.
According to the command’s public relations officer, Jimoh Abayomi, some members of the public swiftly alerted the police when the individuals were exhibiting behaviours consistent with cult activities.
While disclosing that the suspects, who are in custody, had made useful statements, Abayomi stated that investigations had begun towards apprehending other members of the syndicate.
Abayomi, who added that the operation was carried out by the Command’s Special Anti-Cultism Squad, reiterated the Command’s zero-tolerance stance against cultism and all forms of criminality.
He said, “Acting swiftly on the intelligence, a team of operatives from the Special Anti-Cultism Squad was immediately mobilised to the location. Upon arrival, the operatives tactically cordoned off the area and successfully apprehended the suspects.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects are members of the notorious Eiye Confraternity, a secret cult group associated with violent crimes, unlawful gatherings, and threats to public peace and order.
“The suspects are currently in police custody and have made useful statements that are aiding the investigation. Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to deepen investigation with a view to uncovering the broader network of the group, identifying additional members, and preventing any planned criminal activities linked to the syndicate.
“CP Adebowale has commended the prompt and professional response of the operatives involved in the operation, as well as the members of the public whose timely information made the success possible. He emphasised that community partnership remains a critical component in effective policing and crime prevention.
“The CP further reiterated the Command’s zero-tolerance stance against cultism and all forms of criminality, noting that the Command will continue to intensify intelligence-driven operations across the state to ensure the safety and security of all residents.
“Members of the public, particularly youths, are strongly advised to steer clear of cult-related activities and associations, as the consequences are severe and far-reaching. Parents and guardians are equally encouraged to monitor their wards and guide them against involvement in unlawful groups.
“The Command assures the public that the suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigation, and justice will be pursued to its logical conclusion.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and continue to provide useful information to the police, with the assurance that all information will be treated with strict confidentiality.”
