The Lagos State government has called on residents, particularly those living in low-lying areas, to remain vigilant as the ongoing intense rainfall is expected to result in flash floods across the state.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, warned that weather forecasts from the state’s monitoring stations indicate thunderstorms and widespread convective rainfall with dense cloud cover in the coming days.
He explained that the geostationary imagery suggests many areas will experience very heavy rainfall and flash floods, consistent with earlier warnings issued this year. “All areas abutting rivers and lagoons in Lagos are also at risk of flash floods with strong currents,” Wahab stated.
He advised residents to stay indoors during heavy rain unless necessary, urging them to assess conditions and make necessary preparations before venturing out. Parents were also cautioned to supervise their children, especially those on mid-term holidays, to prevent them from playing in the rain or swimming in flash floods.
Wahab reiterated warnings to motorists and pedestrians against navigating flooded areas, noting that vehicles could become submerged and people swept away in high currents.
As a coastal state, Lagos faces rising water levels in its lagoon during heavy rainfalls, which cause tidal locks that hinder water discharge from drainage systems. Residents were warned against dumping refuse into drains during the rains, as blocked drains exacerbate flooding.
The Commissioner assured that the state government consistently cleans and maintains its drainage systems year-round to manage rainwater runoff. However, he emphasised that additional efforts are necessary during heavy rains to mitigate the impact of flash floods.
