Flood alert: Lagos ramps up drainage operations, urges residents’ support

The Lagos State government has launched an intensive cleaning and clearing operation on major drainage channels across the state to prevent flooding.

This came as the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) issued a warning that 20 states, including Lagos, Sokoto, Benue, and Edo, are at high risk of flash floods in July due to heavy rainfall.

The warning followed widespread criticism of state governments for failing to effectively utilise over N620 billion in ecological funds meant for disaster prevention.

The Guardian yesterday visited Obalende, where officials from the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources were seen clearing waste from drains to ensure free flow of water and reduce flood risks.

Similar operations were carried out by operatives of the Emergency Flood Abatement Gang (EFAG) along Ojo Road in Ajegunle (Ifelodun LCDA), the Meiran Collector Drain in Agbado-Oke Odo LCDA, Lewis Street by Beecroft Street on Lagos Island, Ayinke Timson Drive in Amuwo Odofin Council, and Samuel Manuwa Street in Ikoyi-Obalende (Eti-Osa Council).

Residents in Obalende commended the government for the ongoing clean-up.

A resident, Iya Maleek, said, “The Lagos State government is doing well. They are ensuring a clean environment to prevent cholera.”

A trader, Bolakale Jamiu, expressed satisfaction with the improvement, saying, “The gutter used to smell a lot due to human waste, but now it is better. I hope they help us dispose of the waste properly.”

Another resident, Eniola Yusuf, also noted, “Mosquitoes used to bother me, but the waste removal is helping.”

Meanwhile, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, stated that the clean-up operation is part of the government’s broader effort to mitigate flood risks, particularly during the rainy season.

He urged residents to support the initiative by refraining from dumping waste into drains and by keeping their surroundings clean.
