The Lagos State Government on Thursday began remedial measures against flooding by establishing a pumping station at Adeniji Adele Underbridge.
The aim is to remove stormwater in Aroloya Street, Ojo-Giwa, Binuyo, Oroyinyin, and other areas in Lagos Island affected by flooding due to ongoing construction.
The choice of Adeniji Adele Underbridge for the pumping station was made to avoid disrupting the construction work already underway in the listed areas.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a statement, said this measure will provide relief to the affected residents and business owners.
He attributed the flooding to the temporary blockages caused by the ongoing constructions which are part of the overall regeneration of Lagos island.
Wahab urged business owners and residents to bear with the state government temporarily as the construction progresses.
He assured that the construction would be completed quickly and encouraged stakeholders to follow waste guidelines set by the state government to support the project’s success.
Wahab emphasised that the government has approved a comprehensive regeneration plan for Lagos Island, including enhancing, improving, and expanding the drainage infrastructure, constructing pumping stations with smart flood control sensors, and promoting sustainable urban regeneration by reconstructing major roads to address tidal challenges.
Contractors, he said, are presently on site.
Wahab appealed for the cooperation of residents and business owners, adding that occasional disruptions may occur as efforts are made to minimise inconveniences.
He assured that the government’s top priority is the welfare of all Lagosians.
