In a bid to strengthen agricultural development and improve access to affordable food, the Kwara State Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has launched the “Thursday Fish Market.” The weekly event, held at the ministry’s premises in Ilorin, aims to provide fresh and processed fish at budget-friendly prices while empowering local farmers and boosting the state’s economy.
During the inaugural edition, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Oloruntoyosi Thomas, highlighted the market’s significance. She noted that residents could purchase a wide range of fish varieties, including catfish, tilapia, and croaker, at prices tailored to ease financial burdens.
“Fish breeders can also purchase fingerlings, juvenile catfish, fish feeds, and medications,” said Mrs Thomas. “Additionally, consultancy services will be available to assist new and experienced fish farmers in areas such as fish farming and processing, ensuring growth across the entire fish value chain.”
Oluwatoyin Ajayi, the ministry’s Director of Fishery, hailed the Thursday Fish Market as a pioneering initiative not only for Kwara State but for Nigeria as a whole.
“The uniqueness of our Thursday fish market centres around quality, affordability, and longevity in shelf life” said Mrs. Ajayi.
The initiative has already garnered positive feedback from the public. Faoziyah Abdulazeez, a customer, praised the market for its significantly lower prices compared to other markets in the state. She urged the government to replicate the model for other essential commodities.
Vendors also expressed gratitude for the platform’s economic benefits. Yemisi Oluwole, a fish farmer, shared how the initiative has enhanced the visibility of her products.
“My fish, processed here in Kwara State, is not only popular locally but also sells across neighbouring states and internationally,” said Mrs. Oluwole. “I am grateful to the state government for creating this opportunity to expand trade.”
The Ministry of Agriculture has assured the public of an all-season supply of fresh and smoked fish, reiterating its commitment to food security and farmer empowerment.
Residents are encouraged to visit the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development every Thursday to experience the vibrant fish market and support local farmers.
