The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Rivers State Sector Command, has commenced a special operation to tackle the menace of fake number plates and vehicle registration numbers.

The operation, which began on Monday, February 17th, 2025, is targeted at vehicles with fake registration numbers and illegal use of number plates by private, commercial, government, and diplomatic vehicles.

Sector Commander Inyang Umoh, who led the operation alongside senior officers and men of the Command, emphasised that the operation is a national directive ongoing in Abuja and other parts of the country.

“The significance of this operation is about security,” Umoh explained. “The number plate we are using today has security features that benefit both the state and the individual using the vehicle,” Umoh said.

Umoh highlighted the importance of registering vehicles through the FRSC portal, which has a unique function that enables the recovery of stolen vehicles. In 2024, the FRSC recovered 74 vehicles nationwide, with 12 of those recoveries made in Rivers State using the portal.

The sector commander urged members of the public to regularize their vehicle registrations, especially when purchasing or repurchasing a vehicle from someone else.

Umoh said, “If anything happens to the vehicle, I assure the public that the vehicle will be recovered. Nobody can steal a vehicle today and change the number plate or do re-registration; it is not possible.”

Meanwhile, the operation will continue throughout the week, with the FRSC working to ensure that all vehicles in Rivers State are properly registered and display genuine number plates.
