FRSC urges motorists to exercise caution on pothole-ridden roads during rainy season

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Command, has urged motorists to exercise caution when approaching potholes on highways to prevent avoidable crashes during the rainy season.

The Sector Commander, Oludare Ogunjobi, who spoke with journalists yesterday in Ota, said the advisory was necessary to remind drivers of wet and slippery road conditions that reduce vehicle control.

He advised motorists to maintain double or triple the usual following distance to allow sufficient braking time.

“The FRSC is appealing to motorists to apply common-sense speed limits by reducing their speed below the posted limit when it rains.

“Motorists should also exercise extreme caution and prioritise proactive vehicle maintenance to prevent unnecessary loss of lives,” he said.

Ogunjobi urged drivers to check their tyres for wear and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy by inspecting essential components, including windscreen wipers, before travelling.

He advised the prompt replacement of worn-out wiper blades to maintain clear visibility.

The commander stressed the importance of ensuring that headlamps, brake lights, braking systems and indicators are in proper working condition, especially during heavy rain.

He also cautioned motorists to avoid flood-prone areas and refrain from driving through flooded roads or running water.

Ogunjobi further advised drivers to pull over safely and wait for the rain to subside when visibility is poor.

He noted that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, in April, predicted variable rainfall patterns for the year, with Ogun expected to experience a prolonged rainy season.

The commander added that recent alerts from the Federal Ministry of Environment identified Ogun among states at risk of heavy rainfall and flash flooding during the period.
