Group condemns killing of 12 travellers in Plateau, demands justice

The National Coalition Against Mass Killings, Extra-Judicial Killings, Mob Actions and Impunity, in collaboration with the Gani Fawehinmi Memorial Organisation, has condemned the killing of 12 travellers from Kaduna State and the grievous injury of 11 others in Mangun District, Mangu Local Council, Plateau State, on June 20, 2025.

In a statement issued by its interim coordinator, Babatunde Agunbiade, the coalition commended the Nigerian Police for swiftly arresting 22 suspects linked to the incident but called for a speedy, transparent, and impartial prosecution.

“Justice must not be delayed or denied. The prosecution must be thorough, evidence-based, and lead to deterrent sentences in accordance with the law. The lives of these Nigerians must not be treated as expendable,” the group stated.

The coalition expressed solidarity with the families of the victims and the affected communities and pledged to monitor the case closely.

“We urge the Government of Plateau State, the Federal Government of Nigeria, the judiciary, and all relevant security agencies to ensure that this case does not go the way of past unresolved atrocities. It is imperative to show Nigerians and the international community that barbaric and mob-style justice has no place in a civilised society,” the statement added.

The group also called on security agencies to take decisive actions to prevent a recurrence of such organised violence, emphasising the need for consistent, proactive law enforcement rooted in justice rather than politics or bias.

Reiterating the need for systemic reforms, the coalition advocated the establishment of special mobile courts to try cases of mass killings and mob violence, enhanced intelligence and inter-agency collaboration to prevent inter-community attacks, and the creation of an independent commission of inquiry into recurring killings in Plateau State and other volatile areas.

“Nigeria must not continue to sink deeper into the abyss of bloodletting. We say: Enough is enough,” the coalition declared.
