ICAN, others hold commendation service for late accountant Joy Mbang Okon

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) held a commendation service yesterday in Lagos to honour the late Miss Joy Mbang Okon, a distinguished member of the Governing Council of ICAN and immediate past chairperson of the Society of Women Accountants of Nigeria (SWAN).

Okon, fondly known as “Queen Mama,” passed away recently at the age of 47, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and impact on the accounting profession.

ICAN President Davidson Alaribe, speaking at the service, described Okon as an “embodiment of joy” whose passion and commitment to the profession were evident in every task she undertook.

Alaribe highlighted her selflessness, noting how she completed assignments using her resources without seeking reimbursement. He encouraged her family to find solace in the meaningful life she led.

Herbert Agbebiyi, Chairman of the Body of Past Presidents of ICAN, reminisced about Okon’s vibrant personality, calling her a “bright shining star” within her district society. He prayed for her peaceful repose, acknowledging the void left by her untimely departure.

SWAN National Chairperson, Mrs Hilda Ozoh, praised Okon’s dedication, describing her as a supportive figure who was ever-present at meetings and committed to SWAN’s mission. “Her life was a blessing, and her memory a treasure. Her death is a blow, but her impactful legacy offers comfort,” Ozoh stated.

Representing the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Mrs Barry commended Okon’s hard work and kindness toward everyone.

The service, filled with choral renditions, hymns, Bible readings, and tributes, was led by Reverend T.D. Oka of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, Yaba.

Friends, family, and colleagues prayed for Okon’s family, celebrating her life and the profound impact she had on those around her.
