IBEDC intensifies crackdown on energy theft, records 8,000 cases in 10 months
The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) Plc has heightened its efforts to combat energy theft across its network, following over 8,000 cases recorded between January and October 2024.
The incidents, which include meter bypass and illegal meter tampering, have resulted in financial losses amounting to hundreds of millions of naira.
To address the issue, IBEDC is collaborating with the Special Investigation and Prosecution Task Force on Electricity Offences (SIPETO) to identify, investigate, and prosecute offenders.
Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Francis Agoha disclosed this in a statement, reiterating the company’s zero-tolerance stance on energy theft and emphasising the severe consequences for culprits.
“Energy theft is a significant challenge that impacts our ability to provide reliable service to our customers. We are intensifying our efforts through partnerships like this to ensure that those who engage in such practices face the full force of the law,” Agoha stated.
Agoha underscored the importance of the collaboration with SIPETO, noting that it strengthens IBEDC’s capacity to detect and prosecute offenders while sending a strong message against energy theft.
He warned that such illegal activities undermine the company’s operations and divert resources needed to improve service delivery.
The company urged its customers to desist from energy theft, highlighting the severe penalties, including imprisonment, as stipulated under the Electricity Act. Agoha assured customers that SIPETO patrols are active and vigilant in investigating reported cases thoroughly.
“For more information or to report instances of energy theft, customers are encouraged to contact IBEDC’s customer service line or visit the company’s website,” he added.
