Ijaws mourn as Oyakemeagbegha dies seven months after Edwin Clark

The Ijaw ethnic nationality has lost one of its prominent sons, Chief J.O. Oyakemeagbegha, father of the Ijaw National Congress (INC) spokesperson, Ezonebi Oyakemeagbegha.

He died at the age of 91 on Sunday, August 10, 2025, just seven months after the death of another Ijaw leader, Edwin Clark, who passed away at the age of 97.

In a statement signed by Felix Ebikeme Oyakemeagbegha, the family announced the passing of Chief Oyakemeagbegha, a distinguished leader, mentor and former General Manager of the Pan African Bank Limited in the defunct Rivers State.

He died in the early hours of August 10, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of excellence, integrity and compassion. He was also the first chairman of the Toru-ebe state creation committee.

“Chief Oyakemeagbegha was a beacon of hope and inspiration to countless individuals, and his contributions to the banking industry and his community will always be remembered. His exceptional leadership, business acumen, and mentorship touched the lives of many, shaping their personal and professional journeys.

“We find solace in the memories of his remarkable life, achievements, and the impact he had on those around him. May his soul rest in peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire future generations,” the statement read.

The family invited friends, colleagues and well-wishers to join them in celebrating his life and mourning his passing. Further details on funeral arrangements will be announced later.
