Kano anti-graft boss released after police interrogation
Chairman of Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission, Barrister Muhuyi Magaji, has regained freedom after hours of police detention.
Muhuyi was released on bail from Zone One police headquarters, Kano, late Friday night on self-recognition.
The anti-corruption crusader was picked from his office by a special monitoring team from the office of the Inspector General of Police, who stormed Muhuyi’s office Friday evening.
Confirming the release, his lawyer, Usman Umar Fari, told The Guardian on telephone that his client was granted bail after three hours of interrogation and instructed to report before the IGP for interrogation on Monday.
Fari revealed that Muhuyi was arrested by IGP’s monitoring team, who brought a letter of invitation dated 24th January 2025 and insisted they were instructed to produce his client at the zone one police headquarters, Kano.
According to Fari, his client was arrested and queried over a complaint lodged by one Bala Inuwa Mohammed, former Managing Director of Kano Agricultural Supply Company (KASCO), involving N4 billion alleged misappropriation and confiscated properties worth N2 billion.
The complainant, who held KASCO under the immediate past administration of Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, is under prosecution over a huge sum traced to an account linked to him.
“The former MD is under trial, having been dragged to court over misappropriation of N4 billion belonging to the state government. Also, the Anti-corruption has sealed another property worth billions of naira linked to him,” he said.
“Muhuyi wrote a statement to explain the development and correspondence. Our client further revealed how Mohammed filed a case before the Federal high court for the properties to be released. The court dismissed the matter. Instead of him to file an appeal on the matter, he now decided to complain to the police.”
Fari lamented what he described as a breach of legal process by the office of the Inspector General of Police, who is acting on complaints already before a competent court of law.
