KWASUTH considers mass burial as families abandon corpses

The entrance of Kwara State University,

Most corpse depositors at the Kwara State University Teaching Hospital (KWASUTH) mortuary have abandoned their corpses at the facility, The Guardian Newspaper authoritatively reports.

The situation has reached an embarrassing stage, prompting the management to consider mass burial.

A member of the management who disclosed this said the facility has been overstretched beyond its limit.

According to an investigation, many corpse owners, after the initial deposit, have failed to return for renewal of either the agreed sum or the date of retrieval.

A staff member, who spoke with our reporter on the condition of anonymity, said, “We run a mortuary here, but our people have abandoned their families (corpses) with us without looking back.”

As a result, the KWASUTH management, deeply concerned, has issued a warning about the possibility of a mass burial for the unclaimed bodies.

According to information available to our correspondent, the facility has given a two-week deadline for the owners of the corpses to retrieve their deposits. Failure to do so may result in mass burial.

Confirming the worrying development, the Head of Corporate Affairs Unit, Yakub Kamaldeen Aliagan, announced the plan in a statement on Sunday titled ‘Decongestion of the Mortuary at KWASUTH’.

He said the hospital’s mortuary is “filled up beyond capacity with no available space due to unclaimed bodies.”

Aliagan added, “The Management, therefore, implores the general public to come and retrieve the bodies of their relatives and loved ones within the next two weeks from the time of this announcement, after which the Management will consider decongestion through mass burial.”
