Police reassure Pan-Atlantic varsity community of security
Workers yesterday scampered to safety after a fire broke out on the third floor of Polaris Bank Tower at 61/65 Broad Street, Lagos Island, Lagos.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service successfully extinguished the blaze before it could spread to other parts of the building.
The incident was reported at about 11:33 a.m. and involved a stationary saloon car parked on the third floor of the 17-storey building, which serves as a parking facility.
Firefighters from the Ebute Elefun and Sari Iganmu Fire Stations responded promptly and swiftly contained the flame, preventing it from spreading to other vehicles and sections of the building.
The only damage recorded was to the affected vehicle and its immediate surroundings, while no casualties or injuries were reported.
The firefighting operation was successfully concluded and normalcy restored to the area.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, led operational personnel of the command on an on-the-spot security assessment visit to Pan-Atlantic University following a viral video showing two masked individuals emerging from a forested area adjoining the institution.
During the visit, the commissioner engaged with the university management and emphasised the need to continuously strengthen the institution’s security architecture. He advised the management on practical measures to enhance security across the campus and stressed the importance of avoiding actions that could undermine existing security efforts.
As part of efforts to support security operations in the area, the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF) deployed surveillance drones in response to the incident. The deployment, facilitated by the Lagos State Government, is aimed at strengthening aerial surveillance, intelligence gathering and crime prevention within and around the area.
The commissioner reassured the management, staff, students and parents of the command’s commitment to the protection of lives and property across the state. He urged the institution to take proactive steps to improve perimeter security, strengthen access control measures and maintain close collaboration with security agencies.
The Lagos State Police Command said it remains committed to maintaining peace, public safety and security across the state. It also urged residents to remain vigilant and continue supporting the police with credible and timely information through the command’s emergency lines.
