The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fayoade Adegoke, has visited the scene of the protest in Ojota, Lagos, and assured the protesters of their safety.

The CP had led the protesters into the Gani Fawehinmi Park and asked them to restrict the protest to the venue, but the protesters refused and returned to the service lane.

Speaking on the protest, Adegoke said: “So far, the protesters have been conducting themselves peacefully, and we commend them.

“People should leave protesters for the police; we know how to manage them.

When asked about the measures in place to ensure safety, he said: “The measure in place is that we have our men all over the state. We are here to prevent miscreants whose trademark is to cause violence and destroy valuable property of Nigerians and protesters, but we will not allow them.

When asked about the reason for restricting the protesters and collaboration, he said: “We are collaborating with all security operatives. Experience has shown us that when protesters go on procession, that is the time hoodlums turn the protest to violence.

“We don’t want vandalism; we saw what happened during End SARS and in Kenya recently. They broke into shops and looted, and we don’t want that to happen. We don’t want people to get poorer after the protest.”

There was, however, a mild drama as a protester stripped naked and chanted solidarity songs.
