Lagos records 1,675 emergencies in 2024, truck/tanker leads with 345 cases
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, (LASEMA) has revealed that it attended to 1,675 incidents between January and December 2024.
In a statement on Sunday, the Head, Public Affairs of LASEMA, Nosa Okunbor, said of the 1,675 attended to by the agency in 2024, 167 incidents were recorded attended in December 2024, which effectively brought the total figures from 1st June 2019 to 31st December 2024 to 8,117 incidents attended to by the agency during the Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu led administration.
Out of the 167 incidents in December 2024, road accident category ranks first with 58 vehicular crashes, truck/tanker category ranks second with 43 incidents, comprising 29 truck/tanker accidents, 11 breakdowns, two fallen truck/tankers and one stuck tanker incident.
It added that fire disaster ranks third with 33 incidents consisting of 31 fire outbreaks, one burnt tanker/truck and 1 burnt car/BRT bus.
17 other events comprising 15 assorted incidents, one well incident and one assault, ranks fourth, while the medical category ranks fifth with 13 assorted incidents, with one building collapse, one explosion, and one gas leakage jointly ranking sixth in position.
However, the agency did not record any cases under the marine, train or air crash category in December 2024.
Data Analysis of incidents attended per local government area in the month under review revealed that Eti-Osa Local LGA ranked highest with 23 cases attended out of the 167 incidents recorded, followed by Ikeja LGA with 22 recorded incidents, while the densely populated Alimosho LGA, with the largest landmass, ranked third with 21 cases out of the 167 incidents attended in December 2024.
Furthermore, Kosofe LGA ranked fourth with 15 incidents, Mushin and Lagos Mainland LGAs ranked fifth, each with 12 incidents, followed by Lagos Island LGA at seventh with 11 incidents recorded, Oshodi-Isolo was eighth with 10 incidents recorded, Shomolu ranked ninth with eight incidents, Apapa was 10th with seven incidents, and Surulere LGA ranked eleventh with six incidents recorded.

Also, Ifako-Ijaiye Local Council ranked 12th with five incidents, Amuwo-Odofin was 13th with three incidents; Agege, Ibeju-Lekki, Ikorodu, Epe, Ojo Local Council were ranked 14th with two incidents each, while Badagry and Ajeromi-Ifelodun Councils did not record any emergency/disaster incidents in December, 2024.
Close examination of available data from 1st January to December 31st 2024 revealed that Lagos State experienced a total of 1,675 incidents, with the truck/tanker/trailer category which comprises 345 accidents, 129 broken down trucks and 19 fallen trucks/tankers, 10 fallen containers and four stuck trucks being responsible for 507 incidents.
Data equally revealed that road accidents/crashes category comprising of 438 vehicle accidents, 18 broken down vehicles, and two others placed second with 458 incidents, while fire disaster category comprising 266 fire outbreaks, seven tanker/truck fires, and 12 vehicular (Car/BRT) fires placed third with 285 incidents during the year.
During the period under review, 2024, the Air/Train Crash recorded the least incidents in the year with three train crashes, followed by Marine Category which recorded six incidents comprising three floodings and three boat mishaps, as well as six spillages/leakages comprising of three gas, one diesel, one pipeline and one gas tanker spills, and nine explosions comprising of eight gas and one pipeline explosion.
Data on Emergency trends in local councils for last year revealed that Alimosho Local Council recorded the most number of cases with 262 incidents, while Ikeja placed a distant second with 185 incidents and Eti-Osa Local Council placed third with 168 cases, while Badagry Local Council recorded the lowest with four cases, while Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Council had 17 cases and Ifako-Ijaiye 20 cases.
On its part, the Monthly Emergency Trends revealed that the most cases in a month were recorded in December 2024 with 167 cases, followed by February in second place with 156 cases and March in third place with 148 cases, while the lowest number of incidents was recorded in August, Y2024, with 121 cases, followed by July with 123 cases then June and September placing third with 126 cases each.
In the last six years (1st June, 2019-31st December 2024), the Agency has attended to 8117 incidents in Lagos State where the highest number of incidents was recorded in Y2021 with 1,743 cases, followed by 1,682 recorded cases in Y2022 placing second in a downward trend, while Data recorded that the Agency attended to 1,675 cases in Y2024.
