An Afro-pop artiste and social justice advocate, Ayokanmi Eyanro, popularly known as Frequencie, has urged the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to adopt technology and introduce affordable mass transit options as part of measures to enhance public safety in Abuja.
In a statement, he said installing CCTV cameras on major roads and mandating the digital registration of all vehicles would help to monitor and track criminal activities more effectively.
He added that affordable public transport would give residents safer travel options and reduce the lure of cheaper but unsafe rides, which criminals often use to attract unsuspecting passengers.
Frequencie linked these recommendations to the growing menace of “One Chance” operations in the city, in which criminal gangs abduct and extort commuters.
He commended Abuja PR, a non-governmental organisation working to raise awareness of the issue and stressed the need for stronger collaboration between government agencies, civil society, and residents to protect lives.
The social justice advocate also urged that security agencies be given the tools and resources required to curb the threat, noting that many people have unfortunately fallen victim to the crime. According to him, proactive measures would not only deter criminals but also restore public confidence in the safety of the city’s transportation system.
Frequencie further encouraged residents to prioritise their safety by boarding vehicles from government-certified motor parks and avoiding unverified transport operators, particularly along major routes where such incidents are common.
