A Kaduna Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday remanded a 34-year-old man, Yusuf Mamman, in a correctional centre, for allegedly defiling a seven-year-old girl.

Mamman, whose address was not provided, is charged for rape.

The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, did not take the plea of the defendant but ordered that he be remanded in a correctional centre.

He also asked the prosecutor to duplicate the case file and forward a copy to the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

He adjourned the matter until Feb. 24, for hearing.

The prosecutor, Insp Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Jan.19 at about 1 .00 p.m., at Ungwan Sarki, Kaduna State.

Leo said the defendant lured the minor into his room and unlawfully defiled her.

“The defendant unlawfully assaulted the girl, by having carnal knowledge of her,’’ the prosecutor said.

He said that the offense is punishable under Section 258 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2020 (as amended).

The section prescribes castration or death, if the offender is found guilty.
