The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a man, Alexander Peter, for the alleged killing of his 71-year-old mother, Mrs. Atiny Peter, in Ikot Inyang village, Oruk Anam Local Government Area of the state.
The state Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, disclosed the arrest during a press briefing on Thursday at the police headquarters in Ikot Akpan Abia, Uyo.
He said the suspect was taken into custody on June 10, and that investigations are ongoing.
“The gruesome incident occurred in Ikot Inyang Village, Oruk Anam Local Government Area, where the suspect reportedly used the machete to hack his mother to death,” Azare stated.
He added that the command is working to “unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the motive behind the heinous crime.”
The killing has caused shock and concern within the community, with many residents expressing disbelief over the nature of the incident.
Police said additional details will be provided as the investigation progresses.
Commissioner Azare also announced that 54 suspects were arrested across the state over the last six weeks for various criminal offences.
He added that more than 50 arms and rounds of ammunition were recovered during this period.
