A pedestrian lost his life after being struck by a lorry while attempting to cross the Ojota Expressway in Lagos. Preliminary investigations revealed that the fatal accident occurred as the lorry was travelling on the Ojota main carriageway when it encountered the pedestrian violating crossing regulations.
In an attempt to evade the pedestrian, the lorry driver lost control of the vehicle, which then collided with a Toyota Corolla bearing registration number LND 905 HN.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident and emphasised the importance of using designated overhead pedestrian bridges.
LASTMA officials apprehended the lorry driver, who attempted to flee the scene, and handed him, along with the vehicle, to the Ogudu Police Division for further investigation and potential legal action.
The remains of the deceased were handed over to the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) by LASTMA operatives. LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the victim’s family, describing the incident as a tragic loss. He reiterated LASTMA’s dedication to safeguarding lives and promoting road safety in Lagos.
Bakare-Oki also stressed the dangers of crossing high-speed expressways outside designated areas, calling such behaviour both reckless and irresponsible.
“It is reckless and illegal to disregard the infrastructure provided for pedestrian safety. The Lagos State Government has invested significantly in pedestrian bridges, and it is essential for all road users to use them responsibly,” he stated.
He further warned that disregarding traffic safety rules endangers not only individuals but the broader public, urging collective vigilance and adherence to prevent similar tragedies.
