The Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, has assured residents that the command will conduct a thorough investigation into the death of local musician Chikezie Okezie Nwamba, popularly known as Igbo-Jah, who was allegedly killed by a police officer.

Uzuegbu made this commitment during a visit to the family of the deceased Ogene musician, accompanied by senior state government officials, to express condolences over the tragic shooting and death of the musician by a police officer.

In a statement obtained by The Guardian, the Commissioner reassured the family, relatives, friends, and residents of the state that the investigation into the incident would be completed swiftly, with justice served accordingly.

On Saturday, protests erupted following the alleged killing, with hundreds of residents marching towards the anti-cult headquarters and attempting to set it ablaze.

Police officers on the scene managed to prevent the arson attempt. The protesters also blocked roads in parts of the state capital, including Onu Asata, where they set tyres on fire.

He reiterated his condolences to all those affected by the tragic death of the musician, urging the public to trust the police to ensure justice is served.

Meanwhile, Police Inspector Ozonwanji Joseph has been identified as the officer responsible for the shooting.

In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Enugu State Command, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed that the officer is currently in custody and will face the full force of the law upon the conclusion of the investigation.
