NDLEA intercepts China bound businesswoman with illicit drugs, N12.3b at Lagos

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA)

THE National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 38 year old businesswoman, Iwebema Ogechi Peace, with 7.5 kilogrammes of cocaine concealed in her luggage while she was attempting to board a flight to Beijing, China.

The agency also intercepted 4,959 kilogrammes of Canadian Loud, a potent strain of cannabis worth over N12.3 billion at the Apapa Port Complex, Lagos.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, disclosed that the female suspect was apprehended on Sunday, June 21, 2026, at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.

A search of her check in luggage revealed four large parcels of the Class A drug, professionally hidden in a false bottom.

Speaking on the Apapa port seizure, Babafemi noted that the illicit consignment hidden inside a 40 foot container was tracked for four weeks from Toronto, Canada, before its joint examination on Wednesday.

The spokesperson further revealed that operatives in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Anambra State dismantled a syndicate that plants illicit drugs in the luggage of unsuspecting commercial transport passengers. The breakthrough followed the interception of 467.7 grammes of methamphetamine in a commercial bus in Abaji, FCT.

He said “During a search of the bus, a waybill package was recovered containing whitish substances suspected to be methamphetamine.”

A follow up operation led to the arrest of the designated receiver, Mrs Gloria Peter, at Utako motor park who vehemently denied ownership of the package.

Further investigations implicated the bus driver who confessed to planting the drugs on the directive of the actual owner, Onyebuchi Victor Okoye, who was subsequently arrested.

Additionally, Babafemi disclosed that two nationals of Benin Republic and a Nigerian were arrested at Mile 2, Lagos, after operatives recovered 558,900 pills of Tramadol concealed in a truck’s fabricated compartment.

Commending the operatives for the string of successful operations, the NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), lauded their supply reduction efforts and A them “not to rest on their oars” in the ongoing fight against transnational drug cartels.
