The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has deployed essential relief materials to support victims displaced by the recent attack on Yelwata community in Benue State.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Head of NEMA’s Press Unit, Manzo Ezekiel, the intervention followed a rapid needs assessment carried out by officials from NEMA, the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Nigerian Red Cross Society, and security agencies.
The Director General of NEMA, Zubaida Umar, has directed the agency’s North Central Zonal Office, led by Zonal Director Aliyu Waziri, to oversee the distribution of the relief items in collaboration with Benue SEMA. She also ordered a detailed assessment of the affected population and infrastructure to determine the need for additional support.
“The relief materials approved and deployed are food and non-food items including bags of parboiled rice, maize, spaghetti, vegetable oil, seasoning cubes, tomato paste, iodised salt and mattresses,” the statement read.
NEMA reiterated its commitment to working with stakeholders to alleviate the suffering of affected residents and restore stability to the community.
Earlier, the agency reported that no fewer than 6,527 people, including pregnant women, nursing mothers, and the elderly, were displaced as a result of the attacks.
