Nigerian woman arrested in India over alleged cocaine trafficking ring

Indian police have arrested a 41-year-old Nigerian woman, Sarah Kumama, in Bengaluru for her alleged involvement in a transnational cocaine trafficking ring spanning several Indian cities.

The arrest was confirmed by The Times of India on Thursday. Authorities said Kumama, who also went by the aliases “Happiness” and “Blessings,” was a central figure in the network and played a key role in coordinating drug distribution operations across Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Chennai.

Kumama’s arrest brings the total number of suspects apprehended since the start of the crackdown in January to 25. The operation began with the arrest of two Indian nationals, Fayaz Ahmed and S. Chandrasekar, who were caught with cocaine in a joint sting involving the Anti-Narcotics Intelligence Unit and Choolaimedu police. Ahmed is also facing a separate murder charge, police disclosed.

The operation has since expanded to other cities, leading to the arrests of additional Nigerian nationals including Eko Nathanial Chibuzor in Mumbai and Ebere Moses Obogodo in Bengaluru, both of whom are suspected to have supplied drugs to Chennai-based dealers.

Others detained include Julian Dishan, a nightclub DJ, and M. Arunraj, a bar manager, both accused of distributing cocaine at a nightlife venue in Nungambakkam. Four suspects under the age of 21 were also identified.

An officer involved in the investigation said law enforcement agencies are still tracing the full extent of the supply network. “With Sarah’s arrest, we have apprehended 25 people involved in this network. Efforts are on to trace more links in the supply chain,” the officer stated.

Items recovered from the suspects include 65 grams of cocaine, 1.7 kilograms of ganja, various drug paraphernalia, 20 mobile phones, several vehicles, and weighing machines.

Authorities said the investigation remains active, and more arrests could follow as police probe further connections within and outside India.
