Nine-year-old boy needs N37m for kidney transplant

Parents of a nine-year-old boy, Chukwuebuka Amaechi, are in a race against time to raise N37 million to save their dying son.

According to a medical report, Chukwuebuka was first presented to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) Children’s Emergency on May 21, 2025 due to a generalised body swelling, inability to urinate, and breathlessness.

A diagnosis of severe acute kidney injury was made.

He had previously been seen at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, in May 2024, where he was diagnosed with Steroid Resistant Nephrotic Syndrome (SRNS) and began medication and follow-up care.

Following a review at the LUTH, a final diagnosis of End Stage Renal Disease (CKD stage V) was made.

The report indicated that he urgently needs a kidney transplant as the definitive management of his clinical condition.

Speaking with The Guardian, his father, Ekwefi Amaech, said: “We noticed his body was swollen in May 2025 and we went to a nearby hospital. We were then referred to LUTH where he was diagnosed with kidney disease and we started dialysis.

“We were informed that we needed to raise N37 million and I have spent N2 million on dialysis. I am appealing to everyone to please come to my aid and help save my child.
