No life lost as petrol tanker overturns, sparks fire in Lagos

Lagos State authorities successfully contained a major traffic and fire incident on Sunday at Iyana-Isolo inward Oshodi, after a petroleum-laden tanker overturned and ignited flames that threatened nearby vehicles.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) led a coordinated emergency response that involved multiple agencies, preventing any loss of life.

According to Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, the tanker, carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), overturned due to over speeding, causing a fire that quickly spread to four nearby trucks.

“LASTMA operatives, under the direct supervision of our operational command, immediately engaged allied responders, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, officers of the Nigeria Police Force from Aswani, Ilasa, and Mushin Divisions, and personnel from the Neighbourhood Safety Corps,” Taofiq said. “Their joint efforts prevented the fire from escalating further.”

General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, confirmed that additional personnel from adjacent zones were mobilized to strengthen containment measures.

He reported that no casualties were recorded, crediting the agency’s rapid deployment and the cordoning of the affected corridor.

“Prompt intervention by LASTMA operatives ensured the safety of motorists and residents in the area,” Bakare-Oki said.

He further reminded operators of articulated vehicles and fuel tankers to observe speed limits and other statutory road regulations, emphasizing that adherence is essential for protecting human life and property. “Compliance with these rules is non-negotiable,” he said.

Bakare-Oki also urged the public to report traffic incidents or emergencies through LASTMA’s toll-free hotline, 080000527862, highlighting the agency’s preparedness to respond promptly to unforeseen events.
