Ondo begins excavation as flood ravages town, destroys properties
Property worth millions of naira was destroyed by a flood that hit parts of Ondo town, Ondo State, on Friday.
The flood, triggered by several hours of heavy rainfall, affected areas like Itanla, Oka, Odo Ijomu, Bethlehem, and the Akure-Ondo Expressway.
Many houses and vehicles in the impacted streets were submerged by the flood, forcing numerous residents to evacuate their homes.
However, there were no reported fatalities from the incident.
Reacting to the situation, the state government announced that it had ordered evacuations in the affected areas and that rapid response efforts had commenced to prevent further damages.
According to the Environment Commissioner, Oyeniyi Oseni, the government has deployed amphibious excavators to dredge critical erosion-prone areas.
The commissioner indicated that “the cause of the flooding on Friday could also be attributed to development on waterways in an estate at Fagun and along Ife Road area of the community.”
He further stated that his ministry would collaborate with the relevant sections of the government to address the unlawful development along the waterways.
