Outpouring of love for stabbed Nigerian teacher, as pupil is charged for attempted murder

FRIENDS and former students of Vincent Uzomah, the Nigerian-born teacher stabbed by one of his pupils in his science class at the Dixons Kings Academy in Bradford, on Thursday morning, have sent prayers and “get well messages” to the 50-year-old father of two. His attacker, meanwhile, was charged with attempted murder, when he appeared at Bradford and Keighley Youth Court on Saturday.

The 14-year-old pupil, who cannot be named because he’s a child, came to court in black tracksuit with the logo of sporting wear giant, Adidas, only stood to confirm his identity during the brief hearing.

Richard Canning, defending, told the court the teenager denies the charge. The Magistrate, Gill Arnold, then told him that his client’s trial would commence at the Bradford Crown court on June 29. The boy was ordered to be remanded at a youth prison pending his trial.

Uzomah, who was knifed once in the stomach during the early morning attack, remained in hospital as at Saturday and was not there to see his attacker or see him being charged.

But friends and well-wishers, including former pupils of the University of Leeds Civil Engineering graduates, have left prayers and messages of support on his Facebook page.

Aishat Sumat wrote: “ Shocked and disgusted to hear what happened to you. You were one of the most loveliest and kind-hearted teachers at Belle Vue. You’re in my prayers. Get well soon.” Zabra Hussain said: “ I was so shocked and saddened to hear of the incident. It is absolutely disgraceful. You are an amazing teacher and lovely person. I really hope you fully recover.”

Justice Akan also left a message saying, “I trust that the Lord is with you,” and “may the Lord’s protection keep you and your family.” Sissy Tzelepi expressed her family’s support and said, “ my parents and I are sending you our warmest wishes for speedy recovery.”

Uzomah, who had only been at the school as a supply – temporary – teacher for three weeks, used to work at the Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, and only asked for the pupil’s phone before the latter stabbed him in the stomach with a kitchen knife and ran away. He was arrested a few hours later around the City Centre.
