The Oyo State Fire Services Agency has recovered the remains of a 33-year-old man from a well in the Isale Agbala area of Sanga, Oyo town, following a distress call received in the early hours of Sunday.
Officials of the agency, under the Oyo Zonal Command, confirmed that the incident was reported at about 11:56 am on January 25, 2026, through a running caller who arrived on a Bajaj motorcycle, alongside one Mr. Adebayo Ibrahim, to alert authorities to an emergency situation in the neighbourhood.
According to a statement from the agency, officers led by Principal Fire Superintendent II, Makinde, promptly mobilised and proceeded to the scene. On arrival, the rescue team discovered that a room within the affected building was engulfed in smoke, while a nearby well was suspected to contain a human body.
The firefighters immediately swung into action to contain the situation and prevent further damage to adjoining rooms and surrounding properties.
Their swift response, officials said, helped to restrict the fire from spreading across the building, thereby averting what could have resulted in a major disaster.
During the operation, the remains of a 33-year-old victim were later recovered from the well within the premises.
Although no other casualty was recorded, the discovery threw residents of the area into shock, as sympathisers gathered at the scene to witness the rescue effort.
Preliminary findings indicated that the fire outbreak was caused by electrical sparks from domestic appliances, which ignited nearby combustible materials and set part of the building ablaze.
Fire officers, working in collaboration with the Federal Fire Service, Oyo Command, were able to extinguish the flames and secure the environment within a short period.
Speaking after the operation, Chief Fire Superintendent Tijani delivered a brief lecture to residents on fire safety and preventive measures, stressing the need for regular inspection of electrical installations and proper handling of household appliances.
He warned that careless use of electrical equipment and poor wiring systems remain major causes of fire outbreaks in residential areas, particularly in densely populated communities.
Meanwhile, the Special Adviser on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Hon. Dr. Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, urged members of the public to remain vigilant at all times and take proactive steps to reduce fire risks.
He emphasised the importance of installing functional fire extinguishers in homes, offices, and public buildings, noting that early intervention could prevent minor incidents from escalating into major disasters.
“Our people must be conscious of fire safety every time. Having fire extinguishers and basic safety knowledge can save lives and property,” Akinwande said.
The firefighting appliance, according to officials, returned safely to the station by 12:39 p.m. and remains on standby for further emergency response.
