Oyo moves to end indiscriminate refuse dumping, strengthens waste collection

Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto

The Oyo State Government has intensified efforts to curb indiscriminate refuse dumping across Ibadan, with renewed engagements with Community Development Council (CDC) chairmen and waste consultants on the implementation of its house-to-house waste collection policy.

The Oyo State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, disclosed this during a progressive meeting with CDC chairmen and waste consultants held at the NEWMAP Hall of the ministry.

Aderinto said the engagement was aimed at strengthening collaboration among the government, community leaders and waste consultants to ensure effective implementation of the house-to-house waste collection system and promote responsible waste disposal practices.

He stressed the need for stakeholders to work together to eliminate indiscriminate dumping of refuse on road medians, open spaces and other unauthorised locations across the state.

The commissioner urged CDC chairmen to mobilise residents in their respective communities to embrace the house-to-house collection system, noting that active community participation was essential to achieving a cleaner and healthier environment.

He also charged waste consultants to improve their service delivery and strengthen collaboration with the government and communities.

Aderinto said effective waste management required the collective responsibility of the Oyo State Government, service providers and residents, adding that sustained cooperation among stakeholders would help improve environmental sanitation across Ibadan.

The meeting formed part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen waste management and ensure that refuse generated in residential communities is properly collected and disposed of.
